Modesto lies in the heart of one of the most notable agricultural areas of the nation -- the San Joaquin Valley. "Water, wealth, contentment and health" is a popular motto for the city of Modesto located within a couple of hours drive time from San Francisco, Sacramento and Yosemite National Park. Modesto enjoys excellent mild weather year-round, making it an inviting area to settle in. Over time it has become known as "Rose City " and the "Garden City" because of its many rose bushes and well-manicured lawns.
Modesto has many attractions including the Southern Pacific Depot, constructed in 1915 in Mission style. The depot's porticoes and long platform have been preserved as reminders of the city's early involvement with the railway system. The Central Pacific Railroad started in the city of Modesto in 1870, gaining control of Southern Pacific in 1884. If your preferences run more to the adventurous outdoor kind, there are rafting opportunities on the Stanislaus River, bike trails throughout Modesto, horseback riding at area ranches, and outdoor in-line skating or skateboarding at Modesto's skate park. The park offers 13,000 square-feet of bowls, ridges, pyramids, and other elements. The variety makes the park ideal for the novice or advanced skater.
Come enjoy a tribute to the city's history and art at the McHenry Mansion and the McHenry Museum. The McHenry Mansion, on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1883 by Robert McHenry, a prominent local rancher/banker. The Mansion is an excellent example of the Victorian Italianate style of architecture, decorated and furnished with period antiques. The McHenry Museum, located a block away from the McHenry Mansion, is dedicated to preserving a picture of the early life and culture of Modesto and Stanislaus County from pioneer days through the mid-20th century.
There are a lot of annual events through the city of Modesto. Among the major events are the B93.1 Summerfest in June, X-Fest in July, MAMA Music Awards, and a series of events called Graffiti Summer, which includes a car show, concerts, festivals, and more.
